Project 1 Final Piece - “memory” through The Poor Image —reflection

In my project I played with the idea of memory and more specifically the act of remembering a specific moment in time. The way an image deteriorates really reminds me of forgetting things, how not every detail transfers. I created a short video with clips of video that had been circulated and sent around through email 8 times, Snapchat twice, and text message 18 times. These clips  play in a reverse sequence to attempt to capture the act of remembering. I wanted to include the audio from the most degraded piece of media with the clearest video as a way to show how the sound of the video also changed as it was sent around—I believe it also gave the video a more nostalgic energy which is exactly what I was going for. As for the photos at the beginning I wanted to create a sense of false memories, a mashing together of our shared experiences that don’t quite fit, memories that are mushed together while trying to find the correct moment you are looking for. I...

Snap Shots From Project 1

Here are a few snap shots from my video I made for project 1! I was having a hard time deciding whether to do the video with an audio component, or just this collage for my final piece. In the end I chose to do the video—it feels more authentic and I was able to include my friend in the recording. I thought it added a lot to the meaning of this piece

Project one in progress

Here are a couple of snapshots from me editing my project. I like the idea of using colour as a way to show the act of remembering. I’m excited to degrade the photos so that the effect is even stronger. In Hito’s essay I like the words “As it accelerates, it deteriorates” I found that to be similar to memory except we are able to remember things more clearly with the help of our friends or even technology and photos—I am thinking about adding an audio component to my project that plays with the idea of how a memory can go from very unclear, to very clear when discussed with the person you share the memory with—the act of remembering “  have in or be able to bring to one's mind an awareness of (someone or something that one has seen, known, or experienced in the past).” I want my project to reflect this act.  I also might play with the idea how memory can be distorted—how I may remember this moment with purple skies vs my friend who remembers pink—Or the concept of merging othe...

Project One Source Image

Image
This is the source image I have decided to use for assignment 1. My friend and I went to a place that she calls her “sunset spot”—this is actually a frame from a video we took while sitting and watching the sun set. I thought it could be interesting to try and use the video and capture stills from that video for this project to see how I could change a moment that means a lot to me.  For this project i was envisioning using the source video form of this image to make a piece about memory. Using the sharing of the file through email. Each frame being shared one more time than the last. In a way making a statement about memory and how it fades in our minds, but through technology we are able to keep them clear.
