Project 1 Final Piece - “memory” through The Poor Image —reflection

In my project I played with the idea of memory and more specifically the act of remembering a specific moment in time. The way an image deteriorates really reminds me of forgetting things, how not every detail transfers. I created a short video with clips of video that had been circulated and sent around through email 8 times, Snapchat twice, and text message 18 times. These clips  play in a reverse sequence to attempt to capture the act of remembering. I wanted to include the audio from the most degraded piece of media with the clearest video as a way to show how the sound of the video also changed as it was sent around—I believe it also gave the video a more nostalgic energy which is exactly what I was going for. As for the photos at the beginning I wanted to create a sense of false memories, a mashing together of our shared experiences that don’t quite fit, memories that are mushed together while trying to find the correct moment you are looking for. In Hito’s essay I enjoyed the ideas of how as an image “accelerates it deteriorates” I wanted to do that in reverse. I wanted to incorporate her ideas of universal access to the poor image and its media, and also the universal means to create these images (text, email, social media etc.). We all have smart phones and access to creating this type of art. We all also have access to digital memories through photos on our phones the same way we have memories stored in our brains. I wanted to merge these universal experiences to create my piece, highlighting a very authentic yet nostalgic act of remembering through the poor image.
